Org. Setting and ReportingThe Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration. This post is located in the Plumbing Shop of the Mechanical and Plumbing Unit (MPU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports to the Foreperson of the Unit and a Working Leader, Plumber of the Plumbing Shop, MPU. ResponsibilitiesUnder the overall guidance of the Foreperson and the direct supervision of the Working Leader of the Plumbing Shop, the incumbent shall perform the following duties and responsibilities: • Maintain and install all existing plumbing systems; • Ensure that the plumbing installations/works meet safety standards and are in accordance with NYC building codes, norms and regulations; • Maintain and install all water, waste, vent, steam, gas systems, plumbing fixtures, steam stations, sprinklers, and any other plumbing related equipment; • Set up system routes, place and cut route openings, and place hangers for proper pitching and elevations; • Perform work based on building plans, blueprints or sketches; • Plan and lay out the routing placements as necessary; • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors; CompetenciesPROFESSIONALISM: Demonstrates professional competence in plumbing and related trades; Knowledge of the latest technology related to the plumbing field; Ability to use hand and power tools connected to the plumbing trade in a safe and efficient manner; Knowledge of relevant safety procedures; Ability to read blue prints and rough drawings; Ability to maintain accurate and specific records and inventories; Ability to correctly interpret and assess diagnostic test results, faults or deficiencies and provide the necessary remedial actions in a timely manner; Ability to prioritize activities and assignments and adjust priorities as required; Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; Remains calm in stressful situations; Committed to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of work. EducationHigh school or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required. Job - Specific QualificationRegistration as NYC Journeyman Plumber and/or Fire Suppression Piping Installer (or equivalent) is desirable. NYC Certificate of Fitness for Sprinkler and Standpipe (or equivalent) is desirable. Certification as a Backflow Tester is desirable. Work ExperienceA minimum of three years of work experience in the plumbing trade is required. Experience in relevant practical work in repairing, installing, servicing and maintaining plumbing systems and equipment is required. Experience with the use of hand and power tools related to the trade is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage. AssessmentEvaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview. Special NoticeAppointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year.
