Job Description:

  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, the University, the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, the Office of Alumni Relations and Development and other individuals interested in the sports program.

  • Possess a thorough knowledge of and commitment to compliance with the rules, regulations and policies of the University of Chicago, the NCAA, the UAA and the Midwest Conference and demonstrated professional integrity.

  • Develop and execute a strategy for building a competitive football team. Implement plans and strategies during practices and competition by teaching and coaching student athletes.

  • Oversee the plan for each football season, including competitive schedule and practices, i.e., facilities, officials, practice schedule, supervise travel arrangement for away competition and strategize for subsequent games.

  • Demonstrate a philosophy that emphasizes academic priorities for student athletes.

  • Counsel team members in academic, disciplinary, and personal matters; consult with University administration and faculty for resolution of problems as required.

  • Provide leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student athletes.

  • In conjunction with strength staff, develop training and conditioning program; organize all practice sessions to enhance team performance. Evaluate individual performance and provide leadership and instruction in areas of deficiency as required.

  • Conceive, implement, and supervise strategies to recruit academically talented prospective Division III student athletes in the football program through scouting, attending tournaments, film review, high school and home visits, in accordance with NCAA rules and regulations. Initiates the submission of applications and handles the matriculation of prospective student athletes.

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches, graduate assistants, and other staff as assigned. Direct and coordinate the activities of the assistant football coaches in the planning, organizing, and coaching of the football team; ensure compliance with University, Conference, and NCAA policies and regulations.

  • Direct the football staff in the preparation of analyses of opposing teams; analyze game statistics and tactical data of competition and prepare game plans accordingly.

  • Manage operating budget. Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditures of budgeted funds.

  • Serve as an ambassador for the football program and articulate the mission to alumni, parents, and additional stakeholders.

  • Assist in the development of strategies to increase visibility and attendance at home and away events.

  • Work with the Director of Athletics and Recreation and Office of Alumni Relations and Development to raise funds and develop other fundraising activities, camps, and/or clinics to support the Football Program.

  • Remain current with literature on coaching best practices, rules of sport; physiological and psychological sport applications; contribute and participate in professional organizations; attend clinics, conventions, and other meetings.

  • Participate in institutional professional development and training.

  •  Reviews the performance of teams and individual student-athletes in order to instruct and advise on technical, strategic, and mental development. Analyzes data and evaluates tapes in order to develop, implement, and teach game strategies.

  •  Manages a team of professionals responsible for the planning, coaching, recruiting, administration, and promotion of University intercollegiate athletics programs. Ensures student-athletes and athletics representatives comply with NCAA and University rules and regulations.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum of seven years of significant and relevant playing or coaching experience in football at the professional, collegiate, or high school level.

Preferred Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA, Midwest Conference, and UAA rules operations and an understanding of the role physical education and athletics plays in a rigorous academic setting, with the ability to recruit student athletes with potential for academic and athletic success.

  • Knowledge, certifications, or training that allow one to manage, organize, and teach specialized aspects of the sport within the intercollegiate athletic program.

  • Ability to recruit, connect and develop staff and student athletes from diverse backgrounds with an emphasis on successfully teaching, coaching, and mentoring competitive student athletics.

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with both internal and external constituencies.
