Setting and ReportingThe Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration. This post is located in the General Maintenance Shop of the Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports to the Foreperson of the Shop and the General Foreperson of the unit. ResponsibilitiesUnder the overall guidance of the General Foreperson of the Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), and the direct supervision of the Foreperson of the General Maintenance Shop, the incumbent is responsible for providing general maintenance and structural repair throughout the UN complex and offsite premises as well as the following responsibilities: - Use standard power or hand tools, make repairs to partitions, tiles for floor and ceiling, and perform preventive maintenance functions as directed by the Foreperson. Prepare concrete for masonry repairs. - Construct floors, walls, construction repairs and shelving using lumber. - Install or remove partitions, fabricate sheetrock partitions for offices and work areas, perform related plastering and prepping surfaces for paint. - Structural maintenance such as masonry, concrete and brick work, etc. - Interior improvements such as framing, sheet rock walls, painting, workstation installations, floor and ceiling tile installation and repair, shelf fabrication, etc. - Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors. Job - Specific QualificationA certificate in OSHA Construction Safety is desirable. Work ExperienceA minimum of three years of work experience in a building construction trade, such as framing, masonry, flooring, painting, or a related trade is required. Experience with the use of hand and power tools related to the trade is required. Experience in the use of machinery and familiarity with working with metal studs, concrete and wood is desirable. Experience working in a commercial or institutional environment is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
